Overview

Birthing Beautiful Communities (BBC) is a Cleveland-based nonprofit dedicated to improving maternal and infant health outcomes for Black mothers and families. Their new freestanding birthing center - set to open in 2026 - will be the first Black-led facility of its kind in Ohio. Located in the Hough neighborhood, where BBC’s mission first began, the 15,000-square-foot center is designed to provide holistic, community-rooted care in a home-like environment that prioritizes comfort, accessibility, and cultural connection.

Design Approach

Desired Designs was selected to lead the full interior design and FF&E scope for the new center, including space planning, renderings, and elevations. Our design approach focuses on creating a calm, restorative, and dignified environment that supports both physical and emotional well-being.

Details

Details refine the story, aligning materials, forms, and finishes to express care through design.

Inspired by the strength and resilience of the women and families BBC serves, the interiors blend residential warmth with the functionality of a medical setting - balancing natural materials, soft lighting, and a warm, grounded palette. From birthing suites to community gathering areas, each space was intentionally planned to foster a sense of safety, celebration, and belonging.
