Women in Construction and the Spring Equinox

Are you ready for spring? We sure are! Bring ON the new beginnings, the changes in weather, and the challenges of a year finally moving forward. The first day of spring is on March 20th, and technically it is an equinox because there is an equal amount of both daylight and moonlight hours. For millennia, women have been at the forefront of change. Women are the builders of hearth, home, and entire movements! So, it is no wonder that with this season of change, we are also celebrating women in construction!

How Many Women Are in Construction?

The common misconceptions about gender-specific roles are gradually diminishing as more women choose a career in construction, engineering, architecture, and building. As a matter of fact, now is the best time for women to get into the construction and engineering fields, because there are so many different positions available, and the career paths are endless. From building homes to planning the future of environmentally friendly eco-communities, women have amazing opportunities to shape and impact the future.

Inspirational Tips for Women in Construction

As we head into the Spring Equinox, our goal is to encourage and inspire other women who impact the construction and engineering industry. It’s time to bring more change to the table than just the seasons! Here are a few empowering and inspirational tips to help:

  1. Build Your Confidence – Often when it comes to underestimating ability, it is women who doubt themselves the most. This means that the best thing we can do is believe in ourselves, strengthen our own confidence, and enhance our vision that we have something valuable to bring to the table each and every day.

  2. Don’t Stop Learning – There are so many organizations out there, both large and small, who provide amazing resources for anyone who is looking to pursue a career in construction. Even if you’ve already started in the trade, you can always afford to learn more. Find your confidence in your knowledge. Check out groups online such as the National Association of Women in Construction and Professional Women in Construction who provide mentorship, networking opportunities, seminars, and more.

  3. It’s an Opportunity – Don’t doubt yourself, instead, apply for the promotion. Grab the project that intimidates you and hit it out of the water. Don’t let anyone get in your way, or challenge your expertise, stick it out and grab each opportunity that heads your way. Each and every time that you feel like you aren’t up to a task, look at it as an opportunity to learn something new, expand your knowledge, and go after what really matters to you.

  4. Find a Mentor – If you’re looking for a way to pursue a career in construction, then it won’t hurt to have someone who’s been through it before to help guide you through the process. Find a mentor who is willing to not only show you the ropes, but teach you how to overcome any obstacles that might come your way. You’ll be glad you did.
