A Stylish Transformation with Family-Friendly Functionality

At Desired Designs, we love helping our clients create spaces that are both beautiful and practical, and this living room refresh was no exception. When our clients came to us, they wanted to update their living room into a contemporary, family-friendly space that still felt warm and inviting. With two young children and a love for mid-century modern design, we knew we had to balance stylish updates with functional design solutions that could stand the test of time.
In this blog post, we’ll take you through the transformation process, from the initial ideas to the final reveal, and share how we brought together vibrant color, custom details, and family-friendly elements into a space that truly feels like home.
Design Inspiration: A Bold and Colorful Starting Point
The journey started with one key element: a stunning floral rug from Loloi. This rug, with its rich ivory background and pops of corals, blues, greens, and yellows, became the focal point of the room’s design. With its playful yet sophisticated palette, the rug set the tone for the entire space and helped us decide on the perfect color scheme and decor pieces.
To complement the rug’s colors, we chose a Sherwin Williams Blue for the wall color, paired with neutral tones like charcoal, cream, and black for the furniture and larger elements in the room. This balance of neutrals and vibrant hues created a modern yet timeless feel - perfect for a space that needed to accommodate both kids and guests.
Creating a Family-Friendly, Functional Design
Since the space needed to be both stylish and practical for a family with young children, we made sure to select furniture pieces that were durable yet aesthetically pleasing. We focused on comfortable seating, like sofas and chairs, that would be cozy for family movie nights, while also making sure the layout allowed for easy movement and play.
Another key feature of the room is the custom floating corner shelves we designed, which provide both functional storage and a place to display cherished family items. The sleek, modern design of these shelves added a unique touch to the space while helping to maximize the room's layout.
A Fireplace Reimagined: Overcoming Unexpected Challenges
One of the most exciting parts of this project was transforming the fireplace. Originally, the room had a paneled-over brick fireplace. Our initial plan was to simply remove the paneling and reveal the exposed brick, but upon closer inspection, we found that the brick was damaged.
Rather than letting this setback derail the vision, we decided to reface the fireplace, adding a more modern, industrial-inspired look that complemented the new design direction. While this adjustment was outside of the original scope and budget, our clients were thrilled with the results, and it became one of the standout features of the room.
The Final Result: A Space That Feels Like Home
The end result is a living room that’s both stylish and functional, with thoughtful design choices that reflect our clients' personal tastes and lifestyle. The vibrant rug, reimagined fireplace, and custom shelves work together to create a space that feels open, fresh, and full of personality. Whether it’s cozying up for movie night or entertaining guests, this room now works perfectly for the whole family.
