Furniture is a critcial part of our everyday lives. We use is to sit, sleep, rest and relax. Often very ordinary pieces of furniture can be constructed and designed in ways that inspire us and become conversation pieces. This month we are taking a look at ways to buy unique pieces of furniture that become points of interest in your home.
Furniture pieces do not have to be expensive to be interesting and well constructed. See some tips to help you begin this journey:
Look for unique combinations of materials - Often certain pieces of furniture have common construction methods. You can expect that a lot of table tops will be wood or that certain furniture legs might be metal, but it is always interesting when materials are merged together in unexpected ways. Look for small unique details - Antique hardware on a dresser, turned feet on a hall chest; look for the details that make a piece special and one of a kind.
Look for the use of ordinary materials in unusual ways - Sometimes the unexpected is always a welcome treat! That rule also applies to furniture. Materials that are used in an atypical fashion give a unique approach to the construction and aesthetic. A metal top with wood edge banding on a coffee table or an upholstered coffee table with metal legs. Sometimes these unique application of materials are just what you need for a fresh look on furniture.
Examine the craftsmanship - You can have a simple piece of furniture that is well made, but not necessary ornate be uniquely beautiful. The beauty might shine through in the craftsmans detail of joint elements or materials. Pay attention to how connections are made in the furniture piece itself.
